Firm fined £2,000 for 25 dead mice found in ceiling

STAFF saw rodents scurrying around Cobo Food Hall, the Magistrate's Court was told yesterday, when the company which owns it, Sandpiper CI, faced the legal consequences of the infestation which led to the shop's temporary closure in October.

Packets of biscuits had been gnawed and there were mouse droppings on every shelf, the court was told.

Builders who were called in to rip out the fixtures and fittings and make the store rodent-proof found 25 dead mice while working on the suspended ceiling. There were also droppings and urine around stock.

A public apology was given by the company's advocate, Sam Dingle, who said lost stock alone had cost the firm thousands of pounds, while the whole bill ran into the tens of thousands.

Judge Philip Robey fined the company a total of £2,000 after it pleaded guilty to charges of exposing food for sale that was unfit for human consumption and running a food business which was unsanitary and/or in such a condition that food was exposed to the risk of contamination.
