People on social media sites, including Twitter, hit out at the traffic delays that left some motorists waiting for up to 40 minutes of queues and blamed the changes to the Town Quay layout for the congestion.

In a Twitter post, which was directed at several deputies, including Environment minister Deputy Yvonne Burford, Mark Hamon said: 'The new road system is working well today!!!! Shocking.'

Someone going by the name of Grumbling Guern also put their concerns to Chief Minister Jonathan Le Tocq, who has revealed he was also caught up in the jams and said concerns would be taken on board by a working party reviewing the seafront changes.

Motorist Adrian Lancaster said it took him 20 minutes just to get from North Beach to Salerie car park.

A police spokesman confirmed two on-shift traffic wardens were sent down to the Weighbridge roundabout yesterday and spent a short time directing traffic to help ease the congestion.
