Former Elizabeth College student James Reilly, and Ted Simpson, pictured, both 21, achieved the momentous feat in 4 hours 43 minutes 43 seconds after nine months of training.

The previous best time to cross the 35km of Loch Ness, which is the largest body of water in the UK, was five hours 19 minutes.

Mr Reilly, who is studying medicine at the University of Bristol, said: 'We made a playlist before which we both listened to and Disney songs, particularly the ones from Tarzan for some reason, worked really well for motivation.

'Foo Fighters and The Black Keys were also great.'
