Two lanes to return at Town Quay

ENVIRONMENT has agreed to reinstate two south bound lanes for traffic in Town but warned that the unofficial crossing will have to close unless another solution can be found.

A Policy Council working party recommended last week that the traffic layout should be altered again in the face of sustained public criticism.

The department met today to discuss that request.

'We are aware that some people feel that the crossing worked previously and hence could reinstalled as it was. However, living with something that is defective whilst dealing with other priorities might be defensible, but actively reinstalling something that is known to be unsafe, due to the risk of a vehicle in one lane of traffic not seeing a pedestrian, cannot be defended,' it said.

Currently the only options were traffic lights, which would take time to install, or to close it, the department said.
