Islanders welcome return of two lanes for seafront traffic

ABANDONING the contentious single lane of traffic along the seafront has been strongly backed by islanders and local businesses, who have said 'it never should have been changed in the first place'.

Environment buckled to widespread pressure and agreed to make the changes earlier this week following an official request from the Policy Council's Town Seafront Working Party.

The department also announced that the recently 'improved' courtesy crossing opposite the Town Church will shut on safety grounds 'unless another acceptable and safe solution can be found' – no date has been set for the work. One local resident said that it was 'definitely a good thing' to re-install two lanes of southbound traffic and that she was happy to see the courtesy crossing go.

'The crossing is dangerous and the traffic in Town over the past few months has been unacceptable. It would be interesting to see what the cruise passengers think.

St Peter Port used to be a peaceful little town and it has become frantic.

'A lot of money was spent by the States and to no benefit. They should have asked people what they thought.'
