PM's plan to expose gender pay gap 'not right for island'

A SCHEME aimed at exposing gender pay gaps in the UK may not be suitable locally, the Guernsey Chamber of Commerce has said.

A spokesman made the comments after it was announced that UK companies with more than 250 employees would have to publish the difference in average pay between men and women as part of Prime Minister David Cameron's bid to end the gender pay gap.

The spokesman said that legislation and regulation in the employment sector should, as far as possible, be kept to a minimum.

He said that since the legislation would apply only to employers with 250 employees or more, it would not be as relevant to Guernsey.

'Very few Guernsey employers come within that banding, which suggests that the scheme may not be appropriate.'
