While Commerce and Employment considers its options over the ban, Defra provided further detail about how many fishermen would be affected by Thursday's announcement.

It comes as support gathers for Guernsey to in turn ban UK and Jersey boats in retaliation for the move.

Defra said there were 28 under-10m vessels whose licences to fish in UK waters had now been suspended.

It said the UK had 13 over-10m vessels and four under-10m vessels with licences to fish in Guernsey waters.
