With the ceremony due to take place on the morning of 5 September, Colin Guilbert, a director of the Cobo Community Centre LBG committee, said the Guernsey Press media-partnered fundraising appeal had allowed the building to go ahead.

'We are now in the snagging phase and we have the ceremony of 5 September and are open from 7 September,' he said.

'It has been 11 months of quite hard work, especially for the contractors who have been absolutely superb. They have stuck to the time, and minimised disruption to people around here.'

Contractor J. W. Rihoy & Son handed over the keys to the £1.6m. centre last Friday, and Mr Guilbert said on the day of the opening they would have displays of what would be happening in the various meeting rooms, and main hall.

Donations can be made, payable to Cobo Community Centre, at any HSBC branch using the sort code 40-22-25 and account number 44126610.

Cheques and donations can also be sent to financial director Pauline Mahy at Les Palmiers, Grandes Rocques, Castel, GY5 7FR. For more information, call her on 257885 or email g.p.mahy@cwgsy.net.
