As contractors began installing a short section of kerbing by the Victoria Marina slipway, to reintroduce the narrower section of pedestrian walkway, the courtesy crossing was closed temporarily.

But it did not stop people flouting the closure, and pedestrians could be seen walking in the road alongside vehicles.

Environment is due to make a decision later this week on the future of the crossing, once it has received advice from professional traffic engineers.

Balloonees co-founder Mark Passmore, 50, was among those who were happy to see it return to two lanes.

'It is a positive step forward to see that the States is listening to the public's opinions and hopefully this will be ongoing when major decisions are being made, particularly about traffic flow.

'However, it is just a shame that it has taken the public to make this happen and not the politicians who were elected on our behalf.'
