'Always room for improvement, within secondary education'

THERE is always room for improvement and a review into secondary education will expose both positives and negatives in the system, the Education minister has said.

Speaking after local A-level students achieved a 99% overall pass rate – compared to 98.1% in England – Robert Sillars said Guernsey youngsters had done 'phenomenally well'.

But when asked why a review of secondary education was needed, given that Guernsey students were outperforming their English counterparts, who are largely taught in a comprehensive system, Deputy Sillars said the island needed to recognise the positives of its selective system, but also the negatives.

'The results are great, but we can still do better,' he said.

'We must recognise what we are doing well – which is building strong relationships between students and teachers – and where we can improve. When you are at a level like 99% it is clear there is no need for drastic alteration.

'However, my vision for the island is that every child maximises each of their own abilities, in whatever way that may be.'
