States officials meet Defra to discuss fishing quota ban

'PRODUCTIVE' talks have been held between Guernsey and UK officials over the future of the fishing ban.

Representatives from the island travelled to London yesterday, the day after the suspension on reciprocal UK licences issued to Guernsey-registered vessels was lifted.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs had banned Bailiwick vessels from UK and EU waters in retaliation for the island refusing to impose

quota limits on its fleet.

Defra agreed to lift the ban temporarily for vessels registered by the Marine Management Organisation and the MMO has contacted the licence-holders to inform them of the decision.

However, it has not lifted the suspension on the fisheries management agreement at this stage.

Following the talks, a Policy Council and Commerce and Employment Department spokesman said the discussions had gone well, and would continue over the coming days.
