Sunday trading laws may be scrapped or changed

TOTAL deregulation of Sunday trading will go to the States next month.

But with Commerce and Employment split on the issue, it will also give members the option of retaining a simplified version of the current system.

A survey conducted as part of its research found that 64% of 1,150 respondents favoured removing restrictions on shops opening on Sundays, 31% the current system amended, while 5% said that no shop should open.

'The numerous debates in the last 20 years have highlighted that the topic of the regulation of shop opening on Sundays is one where fairly polarised views exist, with similar levels of support in the island for each side,' its States report says.
