Town retailers still not in favour of Sunday opening

RETAILERS do not want Sunday trading as they feel it would not be worthwhile for their businesses, despite public support for the move.

The States will decide next month whether to totally de-regulate Sunday trading or retain a simplified version of the current system.

A survey conducted as part of Commerce and Employment's research found that 64% of 1,150 people responded favoured removing restrictions on shops opening on Sundays.

Peter Creasey, managing director of Creasey's, felt total de-regulation could put more pressure on shops to open, even if they did not want to, because their competitor has chosen to.

'There are certain categories that lend themselves more to Sunday trading, like garden centres, but we are not greatly in favour of Sunday trading.'
