'Leave decisions on Sunday opening to us' – douzaines

PARISHES should keep the responsibility of granting Sunday trading licences but 'inconsistencies' needed to be sorted out, officials have said.

In the Commerce and Employment report, which will go to the States next month, parishes came under fire for their different interpretations of the current law.

As part of a second option being put forward to deputies, the administration of licences would be left solely to Commerce and Employment staff and parishes would no longer be involved.

However, Castel constable Bob Falla was among those who did not agree.

'There is some different interpretation that goes on, but I think it should stay with us.

'Our parish has the Le Friquet Garden Centre and it adheres to the spirit of the law by closing off certain sections of the shop, but somebody could take a different view and would have it closed.'

St Martin's senior constable Gerry Tattersall was of the same opinion.

'I think we do interpret it differently, but I think it should stay within parishes because we know our parishes and what shops go in our parishes.'
