Smaller buses will help stop pavement surfing, says Bug

ENVIRONMENT must consider making a 'statement' by introducing smaller buses for 'pavement surfing black spots', a campaign group has said.

Bus Users Group coordinator Fergus Dunlop said it would welcome the idea of introducing narrower Mercedes Sprinter buses for key community routes, while some big vehicles could remain on the main routes.

Mr Dunlop said road users had become used to seeing the current bus fleet mount and surf pavements over the last 10 years and phase one of Environment's bus replacement plans provided the opportunity to show its intention for smaller vehicles on certain routes.

'Bug's view is that Environment needs to make a statement with the first purchase,' he said. 'A statement of intent about not pavement surfing.

'Anyone on the bus between Castel Church and Bailiff's Cross know how much time the bus is on the pavement there.'

Mr Dunlop said there were certainly hotspots around Guernsey where pavement surfing, particularly by buses, was most prevalent and these must be the priority routes for smaller buses.
