The £19.9m. project has a £1.728m. contingency and Guernsey Water has confirmed it will need to use some of it after a trench was discovered to have rock at the bottom of it.

Capital delivery manager Mark Walker said, despite the setback, the project was on course to be finished on time.

'The Belle Greve outfall replacement project is progressing as planned and on track for completion before the end of October as scheduled,' he said.

'The main offshore activity has been undertaken, with the backfilling of the trench section being completed, and all marine vessels have now left the island.

'The section within the inter-tidal zone is still to be completed as the rock outcrop that was encountered has yet to be fully excavated.

'The final positioning of the pipes will also be undertaken later this month.

'The project contingency is built up from a risk register of items, one of which is to deal with excavation issues encountered along the route. This is such an incident, hence we shall call upon the contingency, or risk allowance, to cover the item.'
