'Any road charge will be passed on'

GUERNSEY ELECTRICITY will pass on to its customers any charge  for road excavations, it has said.

Speaking after Public Services announced proposals to charge companies that dig up roads in a bid to supplement its £2.4m. road repair budget, the utility questioned the benefit of the move.

'In general, with the complex integrated planning and co-ordination that presently takes place, there would seem to be little benefit if charges were introduced as the cost of closing roads is currently borne by taxpayers and any charges would simply move that burden to Guernsey Electricity customers, who, it should be remembered, are the same people,' said a spokesman.

Under the proposal, to be debated in September, all utilities, including Guernsey Water and telcos, will have to pay.

Guernsey Water said the proposal would increase its cost pressures.
