Between 40 and 50 young people were involved in the fight at around 11.30pm.

Organisers said they had never experienced such a violent display of behaviour and made it clear it was not welcome.

The fighting took place in the road between the back entrance to Saumarez Park and the field being used as a car park.

Police were alerted to the incident and officers arrested two male youths, both aged 15, and one man aged 18.

Show president Gary Trimbee-Laine said that while the incident did not take place within the showground, it was disappointing to see such behaviour in the vicinity.

'This is not something we want happening near the North Show,' he said.

Security was increased yesterday, as was the police presence.
