Museum workers and volunteers started moving the Roman wreck into the building at Guernsey Pearl on Tuesday and over the next few days they will be carefully transporting the 140 timbers from Guelles Road, where they have been stored.

Museum director Dr Jason Monaghan said it was exciting to see the wreck finally going on show.

'It's not a museum as such,' he said. 'But at least people can come and see it.'

The wreck dates from 280AD and was lifted from St Peter Port Harbour in the 1980s. Since then the remains of the trading vessel have undergone special conservation.

The display building is 11 metres-long by six metres across – too small to fully display the 14-metre craft.

Instead racks have been built on the walls and the storage has been carefully planned to make full use of the space.
