BIKE racks across Town were full to the brim yesterday as islanders embraced National Cycle to Work Day.

As part of the day-long event, Ian Brown's Cycle Shop set up a free mobile bike-checking station on North Beach, where people could come down at lunchtime to have their bike evaluated by a professional.

Ed Smith, 27, who cycles from St Peter's into Town each day for work, had popped down to the station.

'I thought it was worth coming down and even though I ride every day, it's so good to see other islanders embracing cycling to work.'

Mr Smith, a project manager for the States, said that despite living so far out on the west coast, it took him just 15 minutes to complete the 7km journey.

'I would encourage everyone to get on their bikes and give it a go.

'It keeps you healthy and cuts down the ever-increasing traffic in Town,' he said.
