The iconic musical, based on the novel by one-time Guernsey resident Victor Hugo, will be performed by Gadoc next Easter during an 11-show run.

Gadoc says the group is the first amateur dramatic company to be granted a licence to produce the musical away from Broadway and the West End.

Mike Sullivan, 24, is playing Jean Valjean and was not shy at admitting it was a daunting task.

'I am terrified. I normally get nerves six hours before going on stage, but this is getting nervous six months before.

'It is my favourite musical of all time. I would have taken any role in it, but went for this one.

'I have got four cast recordings of it, the 2010 version, the original, the 25th anniversary and the 10th anniversary.

'I am going to start vocal training with my girlfriend – who is also in it – and physical training, so that I am ready.'

Director Lisa Johnston said the musical had attracted quite some interest.
