Some of the dogs were without water and showing signs of dehydration and all were bedded on shredded paper, contaminated with their own waste.

One, a bulldog, had an infected ingrowing claw which meant it could not put weight on its paw.

The animals were bought to Guernsey in a van aboard a ferry from St Malo on 27 August on a proposed journey from the Slovak Republic to the UK.

The driver, Milan Vincze, 59, of 48, Nadlice, 95632, Slovak Republic, was fined a total of £2,500 in the Magistrate's Court yesterday where he admitted two offences under the animal welfare law and another of fraud.

He was told that the fine must be paid from custody or he would serve the alternative of 14 days in prison.
