'Blue lights' staff get own ballot on pensions deal

CONCERNS over how long firefighters and other 'blue lights' staff will have to work have been raised as thousands of public sector staff are balloted on the pension deal.

A separate ballot for town and airport firefighters has been organised by Unite the Union, which opened voting on the latest deal to its 1,000-plus members this morning.

Regional officer Bob Lanning said while it recommended support for the latest offer, a positive outcome was not guaranteed.

He had serious concerns for the 'blue lights' employees, who would be expected to work until 63 for full pension rights when the States pension age reaches 70.

'This is absolutely not a done deal,' he said. 'You have to have in your mind that the last offer from the States was massively, massively rejected. Over 90% of Unite members rejected that.'
