Victoria Tower gets ghostly makeover

VICTORIA TOWER will finally reopen to the public next month, with a slightly more ghostly appearance.

The structure has been closed since last December, but at the start of September the scaffolding finally came down and the structure is now being tidied before it reopens.

Radar and thermal scans last year had revealed large voids in the walls of the Victorian pink granite structure where decades of rain had washed away core material.

Historic sites curator Helen Glencross said it had been a big job.

'Around 30 cubic metres of lime grout has been used, which is a lot,' she said.

'The voids are in the walls, so we couldn't see them and we had to do it by guesswork.'
