Shops still to decide about opening doors on a Sunday

UNCERTAINTY has greeted the States' move to deregulate Sunday trading.

After the decision to allow shops of any size to open and to sell what they want, from mid-December, Guernsey Photographics manager Dave Nash said he was still unsure what his shop would do.

'I do not think it is a great idea, I think it is totally pointless – we will not get extra trade on a Sunday.

'The people who voted for it do not have to work on a Sunday. Saturday is not always the busiest day of the week.

'We did open on a few of the cruise ship Sundays, but that tends to be good for tourist shops, not specialist ones. We sold a few extra memory cards and helped out if their cameras had broken.'

Convenience stores that already open on Sunday were unsure as to how deregulation might affect them.

Dean Guille of Union Street Stores said it was too early to tell. Some potential competitors might even choose not to open, he added.
