'You must vote if you want a say'

'YOU cannot complain' about the States if you do not exercise your 'democratic duty' to vote, St Peter Port North residents have declared, as households were encouraged to take part in the upcoming by-election.

Homes in and around Brock Road were among the latest to be approached by the Home Department's election team, asking anyone who does not feature on the electoral roll whether they wanted to register to vote in the 2 December by-election.

Among those signing up was Natalie Etesse, 35, who admitted she never normally got around to filling in the forms, but felt it was important for people to have their say.

'You can't complain about it unless you do anything about it yourself and vote,' she said.

This message was echoed by 41-year-old neighbour Philippa Renouf.

'There are a lot of people complaining about the current States,' she said. 'Did they vote last time?

'Even if you go to vote and don't vote for the full amount of deputies, or for anyone at all, at least you are having your say.'
