Joint report due on Alderney's finances in early part of 2016

A MAJOR review of Guernsey's financial relationship with Alderney, including potential changes to how services are delivered, is critically important and will be debated early next year, politicians from both islands have said.

The Alderney Liaison Group is behind the joined-up work between both the States of Alderney and Guernsey.

It is due to bring a report to Guernsey's States Assembly by February and for the first time in years has unveiled some of the costs of services and contributions made by the smaller island.

Alderney Finance Committee chairman, Robert McDowall, a member of the liaison group, believed it was important to look at how savings could be made and how services could be potentially delivered differently in areas like health and education.

'There are two elements. One is housekeeping that can be done – in some ways cutting costs of existing services.

'But there is also having services delivered differently, some on-island and maybe some by third parties,' he said.

Mr McDowall said the use of technological solutions could form part of the changes, for example, with some elements of distance learning and telemedicine.
