Police and fire service cuts 'are too early to rule out'

CUTS at the Home Department could reach the police and fire service, its minister Peter Gillson has indicated, with it being 'too early' to rule out anything.

Deputy Gillson said all service chiefs were being asked to look at possible cuts and savings, after deputies rejected his move to get £591,000 restored back onto Home's budget.

He said cuts were now a 'reality' for Home and that the Assembly had signalled it was alright with this when it voted against his amendment to the 2016 Budget.

'The service chiefs have been told to come back to us with ways we can make the savings, causing the least inconvenience to the public,' he said.

'That is the heads of all services that Home is responsible for: police, fire, prison and probation.

'At the moment we are at such an early stage, we have not ruled anything out.'
