'Housing balance is key'

GLASSHOUSES, agriculture priority areas and balancing development between the main centres and the rest of the island are the biggest challenges facing the planning inspectors, who have now finished hearing islanders' views.

Over the last six weeks UK inspectors Keith Holland and Alan Boyland have been listening to locals discuss the new Island Development Plan, which will shape what developments are allowed where for the next 10 years.

Dozens of people have taken part in the round table inquiry discussions covering all aspects of the plan.

Mr Boyland, who had not visited the island until he was appointed as an inspector, said it had been a steep learning curve.
