STORIES and the memories of young aircrew who paid the 'ultimate price for our freedom' can be viewed all over the world in a virtual book of remembrance.

As the last chapter in the launch of the Allied Aircrew Memorial, the online book of remembrance was unveiled at the airport yesterday by Peter Rose, chairman of the Association of Guernsey Charities, which funded the £5,000 for the console from the profits of the Channel Islands Christmas Charity Lottery.

He was joined by members of the memorial's committee, the New Zealand High Commissioner, Sir Lockwood Smith, Bailiff Sir Richard Collas, as acting Lt-Governor, as well as John Goodwin, who has been instrumental in the project.

The book of remembrance, or roll of honour, exists on the internet to enable the relatives and descendants of the 153 Allied airmen to access the stories wherever they are.

Allied Aircrew Memorial committee member Simon Hamon said it was particularly important to have something that people from across the globe could see, given the majority of casualties were from the USA and Commonwealth/Empire.
