Newly-released visitor figures – the latest VisitGuernsey statistics for quarter three – show that the total number of visitors departing by air fell by 1.7% or 1,150 people, and those going by sea declined by 13.4% (8,400).

However, Duke of Normandie general manager Alan Sillett said there was a way to improve the fortunes of the tourist industry.

'We need to lengthen the runway to attract a budget airline. I think it would have a massive positive effect for the island. Although there is concern over protectionism for Aurigny, I think it is worth looking at. Airlines like easyJet fly to other places as well, it is not just Gatwick. But anything that can get the links better should be looked at.'
