A harbour spokesman confirmed an investigation had begun.

The Defiance sent a Mayday call at around 2am, when the vessel was taking in water.

It was 1.5 miles south-east of St Peter Port and the Spirit of Guernsey lifeboat was dispatched.

However, Defiance's skipper said that the Mayday was a false alarm and the vessel was being pumped out.

The skipper was spoken to, because this was the third occasion the boat had needed help from the rescue services this year.
