The department said the new milk ordinance was expected to be presented to the States at the February meeting and would provide effective statutory control covering importation.

It was one of several measures agreed by the States as part of an overhaul of the dairy industry, which also included fixed milk prices being scrapped.

The impact of the importation controls was included in a public survey which was carried out on behalf of Guernsey Dairy by Island Global Research.

This asked whether islanders would be content with the increase in control even if there was a price premium to be paid for local milk as a result.
