Among those expressing alarm was the outgoing Sark Chamber of Commerce president Alan Jackson, who is leaving the island. He warned that the small community was heading down a worrying road if its governemt, Chief Pleas, turned away intervention and support.

The comments came after a 22-strong group of high-profile Channel Islanders signed an open letter calling for a Royal Commission-type inquiry.

Mr Jackson, who runs management consultancy firm Veneti, will be moving back to Guernsey later this month with his partner.

While he stressed Sark's government were not all to blame for all the problems facing the island, he claimed it had failed to act and put in the necessary policy to support business.
