You have got it right on fishing – Labour MP

PRAISE was heaped on the island's fishing industry in Westminster, as a Labour MP suggested the UK could follow in the footsteps of Guernsey.

Luton North MP Kelvin Hopkins, who met Commerce and Employment minister Kevin Stewart at the Labour Party conference, gave his support to Guernsey's fishermen and the management of local fishing stock, as a row over fishing rights continues.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs imposed a surprise ban on 31 July, which prevented Bailiwick vessels from entering UK and EU waters in retaliation for the island refusing to impose quota limits on its fleet.

While that has now been lifted temporarily, Defra has not lifted the suspension on the fisheries management agreement at this stage.

During a recent Westminster Hall debate on fisheries policy in the House of Commons Mr Hopkins said Britain should actually look to Guernsey as an example.
