Developer Island Development Ltd submitted plans in March for 37 homes in a field behind Manor Stores.

Some of the flats would be sold to the Guernsey Housing Association for partial ownership.

The planners' recommendation to approve the proposals will now be put before an open planning meeting on Friday.

The social housing development would have 17 flats and 20 houses, with parking. Plans also include a new access onto Le Hurel.

There were 49 letters of representation received. Objectors' arguments included the proposal was not essential and the negative impact on the natural beauty and landscape.

Many felt there were more suitable sites and it should be in the urban area because the site was already in a built-up residential area.

The effect on roads, traffic and parking was also a major concern, as well as the the impact on schools.

A deputy, who was not named in the planners' report, was concerned about the loss of good agricultural land and said it was not the first time the fields had been targeted.
