Burglar jailed for stealing mobiles in smash 'n' grab

THE community 'needs a rest' from burglar Jamie Hutchinson's repeat offending, Judge Russell Finch said, as he sentenced the 27-year-old to three-and-a-half years in prison.

The Royal Court heard that Hutchinson had burgled the Sure shop at Envoy House, stealing 13 mobile phones worth £4,474, on 5 September.

That offence was committed within a couple of months of him being released from prison, and while he was still under supervision, after serving a 21-month prison sentence for dishonestly receiving 22 mobile phones following a similar burglary at the same premises in May 2014.

Judge Finch said it was clear Hutchinson, a drug addict, had not learned his lesson.

'The time has come to have a substantial sentence to protect the community,' he said.

It was another case, Judge Finch said, of drugs ruining lives and impacting on victims of crime.

Hutchinson, who was living at The Bungalow, Balmoral Vinery, at the time of his arrest, had a number of previous convictions and Judge Finch said a social enquiry report made 'depressing reading'.
