The Ivy Trust, which helps parents who lose a baby during pregnancy or soon after birth, has been granted planning permission for the project at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital.

Trustee Jayne White said remembrance was an important part of what the charity does and it was important for parents to have somewhere to go to remember their loss.

'It is about having a place for reflection,' she said.

The site chosen is to the south of the main hospital building, next to the access road to the accident and emergency department and the car park.

There is already a green space there, with a tree and hedges, but it is hoped that more landscaping will take place and the hedges will grow to make the area more private.

Guernsey Gardens has done the design and also pledged to donate £2,000-worth of permanent planting for the scheme.

Mrs White said she hoped that more companies would donate or discount materials to help the charity complete the garden.
