'Planners won't approve Pollet plans in 100 years'

FIERCE criticism and bewilderment has greeted major plans to remove the White Hart pub, Barbados nightclub and the Food Hall in the Lower Pollet and potentially create one large retail space.

Islanders and some business owners have raised various objections to the plans, which have been submitted for the ground and basement levels of Weighbridge House, including its visual impact, the loss of existing businesses and a lack of parking available for the huge number of shoppers it could bring.

The plans would stretch from the White Hart pub all the way along to the now-closed Miss Nob store and also includes the space currently occupied by Hansen's Grab 'N' Go sandwich bar.

There are rumours that a supermarket could be built there if permission was granted.

Some of the existing tenants have indicated they have a few years on their lease and have no imminent plans to leave, including the Liberation Group, which runs the White Hart.

Mark Le Tissier, 52, a trust director, was among those who objected to the idea strongly, but did not see it getting through the planners.

'They won't get it in a 100 years,' he said. 'That is the front of St Peter Port.

'I cannot believe that will ever happen.'
