La Mare High attendance is now near national average

HARD work by staff and students at La Mare de Carteret High School has meant school attendance has risen by 2.4% in the last year, according to assistant head teacher Dan Cleary.

The school's attendance record was a focus of concern when on 8 November 2014 the Guernsey Press printed a front page story in which the Education Department warned La Mare would suffer poor GCSE results due to poor attendance figures from the Year 11 group at the time.

Mr Cleary said that the article had driven staff to work even harder to improve attendance figures, meaning the whole school attendance had risen quickly since it had been published.

La Mare now has a 94% whole school attendance figure, near the national average.

'We need the rest of Guernsey to understand how good our school is and the massive strides that we have taken in the last year or so,' he said.

'If you were saying to a school in England that you could increase attendance by this amount in one year, this would be viewed as a huge increase.'
