'Ambulances will cost less run by HSSD'

A MAJOR review of the ambulance service proves that bringing it in-house via Health and Social Services is the best and most cost-effective approach, it has been claimed.

Former HSSD board member Elis Bebb was at the department when there were plans to take over the service, before the Civil Contingencies Authority stepped in and struck an emergency deal. He said the plans to take over the service, which were independently verified by two ambulance providers in the UK, would have saved the States money under the model it had drawn up.

'Apart from a method of payment, an expensive management regime and unstable pension fund, I'm not sure what else they give which could not be provided by direct employment of staff at HSSD,' he said.

Aside from leaving the management of the service in the hands of St John the review pledges to save money.

The report sets out 10 proposals, put forward by the project's steering group, in which St John will retain its contract as provider of emergency ambulance services.
