Commerce 'failing in its duty over white van man'

THE Commerce and Employment Department board would be facing a vote of no confidence were it not for the closeness to a general election.

It follows its response to questions that Deputy Laurie Queripel asked on the issue of off-island tradesmen working in Guernsey, commonly known as 'white van' men.

Laurie's brother and fellow deputy, Lester Queripel, said the department was mandated to promote the interests of the construction industry along with good employment practices and policies and on this matter it had failed on both.

'For C and E to blame Condor's problems with Liberation for not pursuing the introduction of work permits is an absolute disgrace as far as I am concerned,' he said.
