Orchid fields next up for Ramsar status?

ROCQUAINE'S orchid fields could get Ramsar status after they were put forward for consideration.

It is the last of five Bailiwick sites which were first suggested as possible Ramsar sites 11 years ago.

Since then four – Lihou and the L'Eree headland, Alderney's west coast and Burhou, Sark's Gouliot Caves and Herm and Jethou – have all been internationally recognised with Ramsar status.

The Environment Department has been co-ordinating the Ramsar applications and a spokesman said a 2005 report had highlighted which sites needed further consideration.

'It is important to note that simply proposing a site does not automatically result in its designation,' they said.
