Policy Council says infrastructure not in place to house 'vulnerable individuals'

GUERNSEY does not have the infrastructure in place to accommodate Syrian refugees, the Policy Council said yesterday, as it announced the island would not take in the 'vulnerable individuals'.

The States had looked at participating in the UK Government's Syrian Vulnerable Persons Relocation Scheme, which offers temporary resettlement to refugees.

However, following a review of the island's infrastructure and legal framework, the Policy Council said that Guernsey did not currently have the 'supporting infrastructure' fully in place 'to accept these vulnerable individuals in the way which meets their specific needs'.
