Close call, but Vazon is spared sewage pollution

SEWAGE narrowly avoided being discharged directly onto Vazon yesterday, after a total failure of the foul and storm water pumping station in the morning.

The station went 'high level' at roughly 7am, and Guernsey Water staff were on site at approximately 7.45am.

They had it up and running again, although not at full capacity, by 1.30pm.

Guernsey Water said the situation had been largely contained, and beach outfalls had not needed to be used as feared initially.

But it had been unable to prevent a small amount of contamination to La Grande Mare stream, although it was unable to say how much.

Operations manager Jon Holt said a contingency plan had helped prevent larger contamination. Pumps were now operating and passing flows forward to the trunk sewer at Haye du Puits.

'We managed to keep the discharge into La Grande Mare stream and Vazon outfall to a minimum with the use of States Works sewage trucks pumping out the flooded pumping station,' he said.
