Alderney Horse Home destroyed in storm

RESIDENTS of Alderney have been gauging the scale of the damage caused by Wednesday's storm.

Gusts measuring up to 75mph caused extensive damage.

Roofing, fencing and trees were blown down and Alderney airport was closed as force 10 gales battered the island, touching force 12 at the storm's peak.

At St Anne's Church part of the roof on a turret housing the staircase up to the bell tower came loose and timber and tiles rained down on the car park, damaging at least one vehicle.

The car park was cleared and the church entrances cordoned off so that it could be made safe. States technical officer Aaron Bray said they would make the section safe and see if Vaudins, due to repair that section of roof later this year, can bring the work forward.

Trees came down in the Val and on Braye Road and the States Works team worked hard to keep roads clear and ensure the sea defences were doing their job.

All flights in and out were cancelled and the airport was closed in the afternoon.

The storm caused devastation to the stable block at the Alderney Horse Home. The roof, housing three stables and a tack room, lifted off and the whole structure twisted.
