'Only logical and sensible approach is close La Mare'

A DECISION over the future size and structure of secondary education in Guernsey hangs in the balance today, after Treasury minister Gavin St Pier said the only 'logical, obvious and sensible' approach was to close La Mare de Carteret High.

Debate will continue this morning on whether to vote for Deputy St Pier's three-school model, or the four-site system as proposed by the Education Department.

In a key speech outlining his case for a three-school system, Deputy St Pier said out of all the secondary schools, La Mare was set to have the fewest students from September at below 400.

He argued that there was sufficient space in the other schools to accommodate those students and it would be the least disruptive option.

'I know that will be deeply unpopular with many people, but it makes no sense to rebuild La Mare and close another school.

'It is only logical, obvious and sensible to close La Mare.'
