Aircraft crew failed to report burst tyre

DEBRIS was left on the runway after a plane's crew failed to report its burst tyre, an Air Accident Investigation Branch report has said.

The incident happened on 23 February last year, when the crew of a BAe 146, registered G-RAJJ – chartered by Aurigny for the Gatwick-Guernsey route – failed to inform air traffic control of the burst tyre for a full eight minutes after it landed. Another aircraft landed on the runway during this time.

After the crew told ATC a runway inspection was ordered and, although no debris was found, a small piece of rubber was on the parallel taxiway.

'The next morning, during the airfield's pre-opening inspection, a ring seal and more rubber was found close to the southern edge of Runway 27, approximately 100 metres from the threshold. A subsequent inspection found a bolt head, attached to a piece of locking wire approximately eight inches long, at the threshold,' the report said.
