Tim Loveridge, who has been in post a little over a week, said he would spend his initial time at the department 'getting under its skin'. Overall, he wants the entire process of dealing with the tax office to be less arduous.

'We have only just started this process, but improvements which mean a reduction in the need to come to the counter or telephone us invariably save a lot of time and resources,' he said.

'We want to be more efficient at dealing with the island's tax contributions and make the process more straightforward.

'It is part of the wider Service Guernsey initiative, where "tell us once" should ensure a much more joined up and dynamic customer engagement through appropriate use of technology.

'The Income Tax Office has recently introduced an assessment process whereby over 11,000 of the island's customers are no longer required to submit an annual return and I wish to build on this over time.'
