Speaking before news of the fast ferry's return to service, the Commerce and Employment minister pledged that Easter ferry sailings will go ahead one way or another.

Kevin Stewart, who said so far he had been measured in his comments about Condor to try to protect the island's reputation, added that the department and External Transport Group, of which he is chairman, was working on a plan B for the holiday period and the rest of the year.

Although he could not give details of the plan, he said there would be a positive outcome.

'The plan B will ensure one way or another that we have a reliable and credible service over Easter and the rest of the year.

'We are working with Condor and others. It has got to be reliable and credible.'

He believed the detention of the Liberation by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency had done as much damage to the island's reputation as was possible.

A team of 10 States staff were working on the issue, he added.
